?The worst game I have ever played in?

A second Somerset player has labelled last week?s Cup Match as the ?worst game I have ever played in? after another sledging allegation against St. George?s skipper Herbie Bascome.

Allrounder Wendell White was so disgusted by what he termed ?absolutely unbelievable? remarks while he was batting that he has already decided where he will be for Cup Match 2006 ? at Crop Over (carnival) in his homeland Barbados.

Charging that he was verbally abused in both innings by Bascome, the 40-year-old said he was ?very upset and angry? and even contemplated retaliation.

?The sledging was absolutely unbelievable. Yes, you get sledging in cricket but when you go into personal details about people?s lives and telling players about where they come from and that they should go back there ? that?s where you draw the line,? said White who contacted on the issue.

?I was called a foreigner and told that I come to Bermuda and stop the youth of Bermuda from getting World Cup glory. I was very upset about it. I think it was uncalled for.

?Everyone loves to win. If you play the game in the true spirit and you win, then fine and dandy. Don?t go that (the sledging) route because it takes the sportsmanship out of the game.

?Four weeks ago I was among the players being hailed from the ICC Trophy and now I?m slapped in my face by being called a foreigner.

?I?m seeing how two-sided things are. I?m accepted just to help them do a job but after the job is done, they don?t care about you anymore. I?ve gone back to being a foreigner.?

White ? who never had any previous brushes with Bascome ? said he never responded to the taunts but called Somerset president Colin Smith when he came off the field to complain.

?When I was batting I was so angry. So many things ran through my head but as a sportsman you don?t want to react in certain ways so I didn?t do what went through my head but as I was coming off the field my team-mates saw the anger in me,? said White, adding that a policeman friend of his beseeched him ?not to do anything silly and just let it go?.

Having played cricket ten years professionally in England before moving to the Island a decade ago, the left-hander stated he had never experienced any such behaviour before.

?I?ve played from the time I was 19 years old in England and this experience was the worst game I have ever played. I don?t get vocal but I had to speak out about this because we shouldn?t have to go through this. It?s happened to many people but they don?t want to speak out,? he declared, adding that as a national youth coach Bascome should be ashamed of himself.

Saying he has lost the respect which he had for Bascome, White disclosed he told the veteran allrounder as much after the match.

?I told him I lost respect for him and he said ?Just get over it?. He wanted to shake my hand and I refused. I said ?No, I don?t accept that? and I walked away,? recalled White, expressing shock at Bascome?s denial of any misdeeds in Tuesday?s following another Somerset player Saleem Mukuddem?s complaint about sledging from Bascome.

?We?re big men and I don?t think we would put stories like this in the paper just because we lost the cup. As I said it?s not about losing. It?s about playing the game in the true spirit.

?I was not brought up to play like that. I can?t get into the sledging thing because it?s not my nature. I like to beat you on the field,? said White, noting that some St. George?s fans have admitted to him it was also one of the worst Cup Matches they have ever witnessed.
