Third defeat for kids

Bermuda?s Under 15 youth squad suffered their third loss in the final match of the Under 15 Friendship Cup competition in Toronto yesterday.

A day after picking up a first win in the four-match tournament, the Island?s youngsters came crashing back to earth courtesy of a slim 16-run defeat against Toronto and District Club at King City, Ontario.

Batting first, Toronto were dismissed for 181 in 40 overs with Asish Mangra top scoring with 44 off 43 balls and Chris Manohar adding 26.

Jamal Woodley led the local bowling with four for 22 followed by Mark Crawford who grabbed an equally impressive three for 38.

However, Bermuda fell short in their reply, posting 165 in 37.1 overs with Maurico Bassett scoring 42 of 48 balls and his Somerset team-mate Jordan DeSilva 23.

Manohar then rounded out a fine all-round performance by claiming four wickets for 12 runs off 5.1 overs.

?This is squad is a relatively new one. We probably have around ten or 11 new boys and so this is a big change from the previous squad that we had,? commented Bermuda coach Grant Smith.

?So this was the first taste of international cricket for many of our guys.?

Losing their opening two matches last Monday and Tuesday against the same team by four-wickets and 40 runs, Bermuda celebrated a first win on Wednesday against Mississauga Ramblers.

Losing the toss, and having been sent into to bat, Bermuda piled on 211 runs for seven wickets in their allotted 40 overs.

Chris Douglas led the local batting with a polished 51 scored off 66 balls while Shyam was the pick of the Ramblers bowling, claiming two for 17.

In reply, Bermuda?s opponents came agonisingly close to reaching their target, scoring 204 before finally succumbing in the final over.

Hussain Zadi topped Ramblers batting with 40 while Matthew Vendryes contributed 37.

Bassett shone brightly with the ball, returning outstanding figures of five for 32 ? the best analysis by a local bowler on the entire tour.

Grant added: ?We saw some good potential and were able to map out areas that still need improvement. And overall we saw more positives than negatives in the team.?

Bermuda return home today from Toronto.
