This one?s for you, Randy . . .

Dandy Town again proved that they have the heart and fortitude to turn adversity into triumph and prevail whenever the odds are greatly stacked against them.

Or as victorious Hornet assistant coach Ju Ju Waldron proudly declared after watching his charges dig deep and maintain their shape with the game on the line, ?no guts. . no glory!?

For after 90 minutes of an evenly contested Champions Cup final elimination clash, it was Hornets who prevailed over Zebras via a penalty shootout to earn the right to take on Devonshire Cougars in Sunday?s final in what will be a repeat of last season?s FA Cup final.

And once again it was Town icon Carlos Smith who came up trumps and served the last rites with a spotkick that put the match beyond Zebras reach after Antwon Russell and Kevin Lambe had their efforts brilliantly saved by a fired up Cymande Davis in the Hornets? nest.

After Smith?s well-placed spot-kick had nestled into the far left corner one couldn?t help but fight back the tears as the veteran striker pumped his fist in the air in triumph and tore off his jersey to reveal a tee shirt with the now forever retired number 16 and the letters ?RIP Randy? written on it in honour of Hornets late full-back Randy Swan.

Jubilant scenes then ensued as emotional Hornets players and team officials joined in celebration in front of the eastern goalmouth just beneath their fans following a hard-fought battle that would have almost certainly drew a wide-mouth grin from the late fallen Hornet who was laid to rest on Wednesday.

?We?re never going to forget Randy and I know he was with us during the penalty kicks,? said Waldron, struggling to hold back the tears.

?I know he is watching over us guys and one way or the other I?m confident we are going to pull it all together. . . I?m sure of that.

?But this win is good for us. It?s been a very emotional time for the team. Randy was a soldier and that?s what we had to do tonight . . . come out like soldiers and now hopefully we can soldier on from here.

?We win together, we draw together and we lose together. And today we won together and Randy was with us for the entire 90 minutes.?

Had Swan been there with his team mates on the pitch, he might have been even more proud of a new-look and more youthful looking Hornet defence that managed to keep the ?strike force? at bay for 90 minutes.

While play in this affair was often scrappy, to say the least, and passing, running off the ball or even using the full-width of the pitch all went out the window, both teams did managed to create a few chances to settle the issue in regulation time.

This cup tie actually did not come alive until the 30th minute when Lashun Dill drilled a shot against the underside of the bar after Smith had sped past his marker and provided excellent service in the middle.

Towering forward Kevin Hurdle followed up with a header that went just wide of the target.

Although Zebras enjoyed the lion?s share of possession in the opening half, forwards Russell, David Hunt and Vernon Perinchief failed to convert pressure into goals.

But it was Town, after a series of substitutions midway through the second half, who spent the most time on the ball after the restart and pegged their opponents down for long spells.

Again makeshift striker Chris Anderson ? who had a spectacular second-half headed goal disallowed ? proved a handful to the Zebra defence while Brendon Minors wreaked havoc down the flanks with some ambitious running along with the threat of Smith ? again putting in a performance belying his years.

While both teams had confident appeals for a penalty ignored after Russell and Anderson went tumbling at opposite ends of the pitch, the closest Zebras ever came to scoring was in the 80th minute when Quincy Hunt raced a Russell rebound wide of an empty net after Davis had dove low to his right to thwart the initial blast.
