Thomas tames top seed

Men's B seventh seed Darian Thomas pulled off an upset when he eliminated top ranked Ben Lau in decisive fashion in the Colonial Open tournament at Pomander Gate.

Thomas breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 victory but then found himself a step too slow in his next match when he came up against Ben Dier with the latter running out a 7-5, 6-4 winner.

Dier's victory earned him a place in the final against second seed Denton Leader who outbattled Gavin Manders 6-4, 6-4.

In ladies doubles, veterans Gill Butterfield and Kelly Holland scored a triumph for experience over youth as they defeated Fed Cup players and third seeds Zarah DeSilva and Sasha Fisher.

Butterfield and Holland took the first set on a tie-break (7-5), lost the second set 4-6 but romped home in the third 6-1.

In Ladies B action, unseeded Yuko Girard made short work of top seed Tracy Berrell 6-1, 6-0 before losing to the third seed Kara Fisher 6-4, 6-3.Fisher now plays in the final against fourth seed Barbara Lambert who upset the second ranked Zina Edwards 6-1, 6-2.

In men's A, John Johnston came through a tough match against young Chris Watson, 6-4, 7-5 before being ousted in straight sets by third seed Ben Ureta 6-0, 6-1.

The B finals will be played tonight with other finals scheduled for Saturday.
