Thompson brings in fresh faces
National coach Kenny Thompson has widened the net in search of the right formula ahead of next month's crucial World Cup qualifying warm-up matches against visiting Trinidad & Tobago.
Bermuda are set to take on the Caribbean team on February 10 and 12 at the National Sports Centre, less than three weeks prior to the official World Cup qualifying series against Montserrat.
Following the Island's humiliating 4-0 defeat against Barbados on New Year's Day, Thompson has wasted little time elevating a few new faces to the national team roster in a bid to reinforce the ranks.
Those recently called to national team duty are Rohaan Simons and Otis Steede (Southampton), Chris Anderson (Dandy Town), Kaiwon Dill and Zane Hendrickson (North Village), Jahnai Raynor (PHC) and former national team skipper Shannon Burgess (Devonshire Colts), who appears to have finally shaken off a knee injury.
Others having rejoined training with the national squad are Stephen Astwood (PHC), Clevon Hill (Hamilton Parish) and Jemeiko Jennings of Village. Astwood was overseas vacationing during the Bajan conquest, while both Jennings and Hill were out nursing injuries.
The national team are currently training four times a week as coach Thompson intensifies World Cup preparations.
"The national team is an ongoing process and so some players will be called immediately and others as time goes on. But the most important thing is that a player is always prepared for a call," said Thompson yesterday.
Thompson, who took over the helm from Gary Darrell late last year, has kept close tabs on his current crop of players and those possessing "real" potential.
"A good performance at club level is certainly noted and even if the call doesn't occur immediately I do note good performances because with the national team there are all sorts of circumstances. You have players that maybe are called to the national team and don't produce to the level that was previously thought or players who get called but then get injured. So for one reason or another there's always a possibility . . . whether it's a loss of form, injury or suspension," he said.
One player Thompson is pleased to see hit top stride is Rangers' pacy winger Rohaan Simons, a former national team striker and catalyst in Southampton's revival of late.
"Rohaan was a part of my original plans in looking for attackers. However, he was injured during the initial selection and only recently made himself available with Rangers," said Thompson.
"But certainly scoring a hat-trick (recently against Hamilton Parish) was very timely and hopefully that form can rub off into the national team."
Thompson added: "The motivation of the players is at a good level and we are spending a significant amount of time on strength conditioning, technique and technical work in addition to all of the other aspects.
"But overall we are pleased with the players' motivation and I'm quite confident that we will have a relatively successful campaign."
