Thompson pulls off Open upset
Tony Thompson, a 20-year-old newcomer to the sport of tennis, pulled off the first major upset of the Argus Open yesterday when he came from a set down to stun second seed Dennis Harris 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the Men's 'B' Division at the Tennis Stadium.
In the first set it appeared Thompson's youthful exuberance would not compensate for his lack of experience as erratic play cost him when serving for the set at 5-4. Finding himself in an unaccustomed position, his nerves betrayed him, allowing wily veteran Harris to take the next three games and the set.
Harris was now expected to take control and roar to victory, but it wasn't to be.
Thompson broke Harris in the third game of the second set to take a 2-1 lead, and then held for a 3-1 advantage, even though the feeling remained that Harris would again bounce back.
But that feeling rapidly disappeared as Harris faded with the advance of the midday sun, and ultimately suffered defeat.
Juniors stole the show in two other matches, as 11-year-old Caitlin Gordon came from behind to oust Dolores Beraldo 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, while Rachel Sawden, a 15-year-old, defeated Lisa DeSilva 6-3, 6-0.
Two other juniors fell by the wayside, however, as Kyle Smith lost 0-6, 1-6 to Kevin Grisby, while young Amanda Burns failed to show for her scheduled contest against Claudia Philips.
Action in the Men's `A' division saw second seed Eldon Daniels open his account with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Randy Bean, while Mike Levon rebounded from an earlier defeat to stop Robert Keill 4-6, 4-3 (retired).
Other games saw John Moore down Derek Smith 6-1, 6-4, and Gary Chan oust Anthony Butterfield 6-3, 6-1.
