Thompson's teens back on track with impressive win
Bermuda 3 Barbados 1
Bermuda muscled their way to a 3-1 win over Barbados in the second round of the 2002 Under-17 International Youth Tournament at the National Sports Centre on Monday night.
Two superb first half goals from Cornell Castle and Georgio Fox and a 70th minute Kyle Outerbridge penalty were sufficient to give the home team an inspiring win following an earlier 4-0 defeat to Canada.
Michael Davis replied for Barbados with an opportunistic strike early in the second half.
Bermuda now take on Jamaica tonight (9 p.m.) in a match that will determine Canada's opponents in Friday's final.
During Monday's opening match, Canada took the short route to the final with a 3-1 victory over the young Reggae Boyz, following their 5-1 crushing of Barbados a day earlier.
Despite watching his team record their first win of the tournament, Bermuda coach Kenny Thompson said there was still "a lot of work" to be done.
"We were a little concerned about their (Barbados) strength," said Thompson after the match.
"But our team stepped up to it and were able to dominate the territorial aspect of the game.
"We played more inside the opponents' half of the field, but we still have a little bit of work to do.
"We must not get carried away with this result just as we shouldn't get too discouraged by the result against Canada.
"We won this match but we still have a long way to go to compete well at this level.
"The possession still needs to be a little more consistent and also the finishing was quite awful in the first half when we could have put the game totally out of their reach."
Meanwhile, Canada's Trinidadian coach Stephen Hart was pleased with his team's win over Jamaica.
"I thought Jamaica were very composed but once we settled down we got the goals and that made the difference," said Hart.
"We came here for quality competition and so far the competition has been nice.
"The facilities are great and it's a beautiful country so you couldn't ask for more."
