Tireless Town seal late glory

Last gasp goals from Dandy Town?s Jared Peniston and Lashun Dill booked the Hornets? place in the Friendship Trophy final last night.

The game was tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes after a scrappy and disjointed match played in a howling gale at Somerset Cricket Club but in extra time Town came to the fore.

With both sets of players looking tired in the additional periods, Town summoned the extra drive and determination to complete a hard-fought victory and shatter PHC?s dream of a final appearance.

What would have been all the more galling for PHC was that they were by far the dominant team in the opening stanza, where complete control of the midfield gave them a platform from which to launch some dynamic attacks.

For the first 30 minutes, by contrast, Devarr Boyles? men never looked even remotely like scoring as they battled gamely into the stiff breeze and found themselves a goal down within the first quarter-of-an-hour.

On 12 minutes, following a frantic melee in the box, Antwon Russell fought his way through a crowd of bodies to bury the ball past the helpless Jason Smith from six yards.

In the second period, the introduction of livewire Peniston added some sparkle to Town?s forward play while ?keeper Smith was not afraid to take the aerial route with the wind at his back.

This pressure almost paid immediate dividends as Carlos Smith ghosted in from the left-hand side chasing a through ball only to then scuff his finish straight to the ?keeper and a glorious chance was wasted.

With only one goal in it, Town always had a chance of clawing their way back into the match and on 75 minutes their relentless pounding finally bore fruit.

Following a dashing run down the left wing by the tireless Smith, Seion Darrell was waiting in the middle for the cross and stabbed home from three yards ? although there was some doubt over whether he, or a defender in close proximity, got the final touch.

Both sides huffed and puffed in the final 15 minutes of regulation time but with several players cramping up in the later exchanges, chances of a decisive goal were always remote and the game drifted harmlessly into extra time.

The physical nature of the match and the heavy pitch had clearly taken their toll and there was little to speak of in the first period of additional time. Blenn Bean?s rifling 25-yard bullet was the exception and Smith had to be alert in plucking the ball out of the air high to his right.

But just when it seemed they had nothing more left to give, Town put in a late surge which caught the Zebras completely off-guard.

With just nine minutes left on the clock, Peniston was put into the clear by a delightful throughball which left the PHC backline horribly square.

Taking his time under pressure, Peniston took a touch before burying a left-foot shot under the advancing Glasford ? prompting wild celebrations on the Town bench.

And just to rub salt into PHC?s already gaping wounds, the Hornets stung again as an Anthony Thomas shot only minutes later was partially saved, allowing Dill to nip in at the far post to complete a very satisfying night for Town.J.
