Title for Rangers?

It seems like nothing will be stopping Southampton Rangers from coasting to the Premier Division 50 overs championships.

But despite this emphatic nine-wicket triumph over Cleveland County at Wellington Oval yesterday, Southampton were not in a celebrating mood although the consensus is that they have the title all wrapped up.

?No, we?ve not won anything yet, there are still a few games left for the others to play and it?s not time to celebrate,? said interim skipper Kwame Tucker after yesterday?s win.

?It was a wonderful victory today, our boys played good cricket. We had a lot of runs to go after after Cleveland had a good knock, the wicket played nice and easy and our early batsmen just went after their shots to end it rather quickly.?

Indeed that is what openers Curtis Jackson and Keith Wainwright did, go after their winning target quickly with Jackson finishing with 109 and Wainwright 72.

The duo punished the Cleveland attack, adding 204 during their formidable opening stand and taking them within victory.

Jackson was the dominant partner with 16 fours and two sixes while Wainwright struck six fours and three sixes.

The onslaught by the batsmen saw Cleveland bowlers struggle with nobody finishing with respectable analysis.

When victory was reached Stevie Lightbourne was at the crease with Wainwright, the former undefeated on 22.

The batting heroics came after Southampton had suffered an injury scare while fielding with an ambulance having been called to take Rohaan Simons to the hospital after the player collided with substitute fielder Chris Jackson in attempting a catch.

A hospital spokesman said last night only that the player had been seen and released.

Earlier Jeffrey Tyrell ensured Cleveland a decent total with his knock of 76, including 11 fours and a six while Aaron Adams contributed a brisk 65, including six fours and four sixes.

Veteran Olin Jones was the best bowler for Southampton with three wickets for 30 runs off ten overs with two maidens while Gary Crofton had three for 33 off five overs.
