Too many questions still stumping cricket Board
As of yesterday there was still no confirmation on a date to the start of the 2004 cricket season, scrapping of the present bonus points system, possibility of re-launching an open cricket format or when Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) will hold their annual general meeting.
While the transfer period officially expired yesterday, numerous issues remained up in the air at a time when the Island is bracing itself for what will be a very hectic summer ? domestically and internationally.
When contacted by , Board president Reggie Pearman stated: ?We haven?t decided on anything yet. Once we have everything sorted out, then we will inform the public. But first we have to inform the clubs and then we will decide what?s going to happen. Meetings are pending.?
Bermuda will host the Americas Regional World Cup Qualifying Tournament on local soil from July 5-11 before the Island?s senior national cricket team kick off their ICC Intercontinental Cup campaign just two days later with an opening home match against USA. The Island side will travel overseas for their second match to Toronto to take on Canada on August 13.
However, it is almost certain Bermuda will have more interests in the former six-nation tournament as three places in next year?s ICC (International Cricket Council) Trophy competition in Ireland go up for grabs.
USA, Canada, Cayman Islands, Argentina and Bermuda traditionally form the Americas region but for the first time in the competition?s history a sixth ICC affiliate, Bahamas, will be included in the regional competition with the top three finishers all advancing to next year?s ICC Trophy competition at which a number of places will be at stake for the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean.
Bermuda, meanwhile, has already submitted its bid to host a 2007 World Cup match when cricket?s premier competition heads south to the West Indies.
However, on a sombre note, BCB announced last week several top players ? most of whom are currently involved in football ? had been axed from the senior national team for failing to attend winter practise sessions.
