Top four in battle for cup supremacy

The Island?s top four cricket clubs from last season will battle it out for Belco Cup supremacy over the next two days.

Starting today, at opposite ends of the Island, defending champions Western Stars, 2003 champions Southampton Rangers, St.David?s and St.George?s set off on the road to tomorrow?s final at Lords.

Unbeaten St.David?s take on St.George?s in an East End derby at Somerset Cricket Club while Stars rest their title on the line against a Rangers side yet to taste defeat this season.

This year?s competition, previously known as the Premier and Camel Cup, will be played in memory of St.David?s cricketer Delby Borden who passed away in March.

St.George?s hold the overall record for most wins (five) in the competition while four-time winners Stars have appeared in the most finals (11).

The St.John?s Road club will be bidding to equal St.George?s? record in a competition the origins of which date back to 1987. St.George?s also remain the only team to win the coveted showpiece three times on the trot from 1988 to 1990.

With skipper Hasan Durham in sparkling form with the ball, Stars handed St.David?s a 45-run loss in last year?s final.

However, Durham and his supporting cast will have their work cut out for them today against a Southampton side that thrashed Stars by seven wickets less than two weeks? ago.

Rangers skipper Janeiro Tucker shone brightly with both bat and ball on that occasion, grabbing three wickets for 28 runs and smashing an unbeaten half century.

Former Star Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock also bowled a tidy ten-over spell which yielded remarkable figures of one for nine, including four maidens.

While Rangers enter today?s clash unbeaten, Stars are currently on a two-game losing skid dating back to May 8.

Today?s other Belco Cup semi-final sees St.George?s and neighbouring rivals St.David?s battling it out for the second time in two weeks. The Islanders handed St.George?s a 116-run loss at Wellington Oval to keep their unbeaten win streak for the season intact while the home team suffered their second straight defeat.

Chris Foggo proved to be St.David?s hero, helping himself to a well deserved century in hostile terrain.

If current form is anything to go by, then Rangers and St.David?s would have to be pencilled in as favourites to advance to tomorrow?s final at Lords.

Former powerhouses Devonshire Recreation Club won the inaugural competition in 1987, defeating Bailey?s Bay by 73 runs at Wellington Oval.

Meanwhile, it will be business as usual for all First Division clubs tomorrow.

In the day?s top clash at Southampton Oval, Warwick host Somerset, Somerset Bridge welcome Police to White Hill Field, Devonshire take on PHC at Devonshire Recreation Club and Willow Cuts and Leg Trappers do battle at Somerset Cricket Club.

All matches begin at 11 a.m.
