Top seeds prevail in doubles decider
The sun might have been missing from yesterday's XL Open finals day, but the excitement certainly wasn't.
Despite the rapidly diminishing crowds, the number one seeds Jordan Kerr and Tom Vanhoudt battled their way to victory in a third-set tiebreak in the doubles final.
After Horna and Arguello had warmed the crowd on an overcast day, the foursome, consisting of three Australians, then took their turn.
And it was the Belgian and the Australian who prevailed in a long match of intriguing doubles.
It triumphing 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, the winning duo had to battle back from behind to claim the trophy against a pairing who had only won one match to reach the final.
The pair, who have won 31 trophies, between them had to battle back in a contest in which the Australian duo seemed on top with their gung ho, attacking brand of tennis.
Only a handful of rallies matched the intrigue of yesterday's opening Legends exhibition match, with all players displaying a ruthless streak that took away from some of the afternoon's entertainment value.
And with three Australians in the final this should have come as no surprise, as they all showed the determination to win that is inherent in most sportsmen and women from that part of the world.
A single break in the first set was enough to hand it 6-3 to the Australians but dogged play from the Australian-Belgian connection was enough to swing it back to 6-3 in the second.
So for the second final of the day, a third set was needed and again, like the singles final, it was only late in the set that a winner emerged.
Unfortunately due to the manner of the scheduling, i.e. playing the doubles after the singles, meant there was only a meagre crowd in place to see the winners crowned - but it was still a memorable achievement.
And it was a shame there were not more people left in the stands to watch the final set tiebreak, needed after the Australian duo had blown a 5-3 lead.
It went down to a tiebreak and it was far too close to call but Kerr and Vanhoudt triumphed 8-6 to conclude a good-natured and entertaining match.
“I'd like to thank our opponents, they were great out there,” said the charismatic Kerr after receiving the trophy.
“This is a great tournament and we will definitely be back next year.”
