Top women?s soccer team on Island tour

Wilmington College women?s soccer team arrive in Bermuda today for a four-match tour against local opposition.

Wilmington, who were in Bermuda three years? ago, finished last season with an impressive overall record of 18 wins, four losses and one draw and advanced to the ?sweet sixteen? of the NCAA Division Three tournament.

The team had five members named to the Ohio State All-Star squad while head coach Steve Spike received the prestigious Coach of the Year award.

Wilmington will take on Bermuda tomorrow (8.30 p.m.) and again on Saturday (5 p.m.) and a National Select on Thursday (8.30 p.m.) before closing out their tour against current league and Konica Cup champions, PHC Zebras, on Sunday (5 p.m.).

All matches will be held at the National Sports Centre, with no admission fee.

Bermuda coach Vance Brown reckons his team will give a ?good account? of themselves against the Americans.

?This is probably the first time we have so many of our own college players home for these matches. All of the players have been working hard in training all summer and hopefully we will get some positive results? he said.

?It?s always good to play at home because the crowd will be the twelfth man and hopefully the girls will have gained valuable experience from the last time Wilmington were here. Hopefully we can come away victorious.?

Coach Brown will use the opportunity to gauge the national team?s progress ahead of a possible appearance in next year?s Small Island Games in Scotland.

The Bermuda team will be bolstered by college players Stacy Babb, Waynesha Bean, Catherine Clarke, Tiffany Swann, Nicole Jones, Tamisha Darrell and Vinze Zuill ? all of whom are studying overseas.

Other players the coach will be relying upon include Sakena Clarke, Tcshana Wade, Marcia Ford and Arketa Smith. Top striker Chevonne Furbert is sidelined through injury.

?It should be very interesting with all of our local and overseas players available to us,? added Brown, who guided Rude Girls to FA Cup glory last season.

?Wilmington had a very successful tour of Bermuda three seasons ago and their coach Steve Spike was very pleased by the high standard of play the local teams displayed.?
