Town and Zebras battle for final spot
Dandy Town and PHC Zebras are poised to lock horns for the second time in two weeks tonight at the Den.
Only this time around the stakes are even higher.
The two Premier Division clubs will do battle for the right to meet Devonshire Cougars in Sunday?s Champions Cup final at White Hill Field and compete for the top purse of $3,000 to be awarded to the competition?s eventual winner.
Hornets and Zebras kick off tonight?s Champions Cup double-header at the Den while Prospect and St.George?s will compete for the sole spot in Sunday?s First Division final at 9 p.m.
Devonshire Colts have already qualified for the First Division final after edging out St.David?s and Prospect in earlier elimination rounds.
The eventual First Division champion will pocket $2,000 for their efforts.
After losing 2-1 to the big cats exactly a week ago, Hornets bounced back courtesy of a 4-0 drubbing of Somerset Eagles who were eliminated from the inaugural tournament on Tuesday at Southampton Oval ? the urban club?s first win in the post Randy Swan era.
While Town have had the additional burden of mourning the loss of their fallen colleague, Tuesday?s lopsided win over Eagles might have been an indication that Hornets have psychologically licked their wounds and now seek to soldier on.
But now Hornets must brush aside the challenge of a Zebras side that emphatically ousted the defending champions from the FA Cup on December 19.
Zebras handed Eagles a 3-0 loss in their opening Champions Cup clash but were then annihilated 5-1 last Sunday at the hands of a Raymond Beach led Cougars.
Although Hornets and Zebras have yet to field full squads in earlier Champions Cup matches, both clubs are expected to boost their ranks tonight given that $3,000 remains well within reach.
Despite not winning a single match ? or scoring a single goal in the competition ? both Eagles and St.David?s exited the festive tournament with $500 to their credit.
The Islanders were edged out 1-0 by Colts in their opening cup clash before going down 2-0 to neighbours St.George?s at Southampton Oval last Tuesday.
Prospect, meanwhile, are set to take on St.George?s for the third time inside of two-weeks. The men in uniform handed the East Enders a 1-0 defeat exactly a week ago in their opening Champions Cup match at Somerset Cricket Club but then went down 1-0 last Sunday against Colts who took the short route to the final.
So far the competition has seen all participating Premier Division clubs field new -look teams consisting mostly of youth players and college students returning home for the holidays.
The Champions Cup, introduced just over two weeks prior to the start of the new tournament, effectively replaced the former Dudley Eve Trophy competition that had existed for 26 years.
