Town desperate to snap cup final jinx
Dandy Town might be considered Devonshire Cougars? jinx side.
But the Hornets face their own demons in tomorrow?s FA Cup Final at the National Sports Centre where they bid to snap a six-game losing streak in cup finals against North Village dating back to 1993-94.
That year saw Town defeat Village 4-1 on aggregate in the former Dudley Eve Trophy competition.
But since then Village have reeled off a succession of final wins over their nearby rivals, most recently in last month?s Friendship Trophy that inched the Reds ever closer to a first triple crown title since 1977-78.
Tomorrow will be Town?s eighth overall appearance in an FA Cup final and second against Village in the past five seasons.
Village blanked Hornets 3-0 in the 2000-01 final to end Andrew Bascome?s tenure at St.John?s Road on a sour note.
Town?s maiden FA Cup crown arrived in 1986-87 under the captaincy of Walter Musson. Town stalwart Carlos Smith is the sole survivor of that victorious squad.
Other than winning a fifth overall Martonmere Cup last November at the NSC, Hornets season has been mostly lukewarm.
And losing to Village for the third straight Friendship Trophy final didn?t help matters any.
However, Town coach Devarr Boyles said his team had learned a valuable lesson on that occasion, a lesson that could help them in their bid to settle an old score.
?Obviously they were the better team in the last match (Friendship Trophy). But when you look at the final scoreline it was closer than their actual performance ? and we can only take heart from that,? he said.
?They executed a lot of things against us, but they should have won it comfortably and they didn?t. Towards the end it was a bit difficult for them and hopefully we are going to be prepared better for this match and looking for a different result.?
Hornets? FA Cup preparations this week have seen them train on three occasions at St. John?s Field, training sessions coach Boyles hopes will give his team an edge on the spacious ?carpet?.
?Each time we play North Village the recipe is different. Our input in training this week has been different and so the output will be different and hopefully the outcome will also be different,? said Boyles.
Asked whether there would there be any changes made from last weekend?s squad, Boyles replied: ?Certainly.?
Unlike Village, who have the added pressure of challenging for the first triple crown in local football since 1997-98, Town?s main priority tomorrow will be to win a second cup title this season and salvage some pride.
?Tomorrow is just another match,? Boyles said. ?And if anyone treats it otherwise then obviously they are creating pressure for themselves.?
Boyles coached Town to FA Cup glory over Devonshire Cougars in 2004, only the club?s second FA Cup title in seven trips to the NSC.
Meanwhile, Village stalwart Kentoine Jennings said his team were fired up for the big occasion.
?This has probably been one of the best training sessions I?ve been a part of all season,? he said. ?Everything has been high tempo; everyone is excited, highly motivated and very much looking forward to the challenge.?
Jennings said tomorrow?s game plan would remain the same ? to execute to the maximum.
?We just need to do what it is we do best. And if we can achieve that and play our brand of football, then we should be okay.?
Should Village win tomorrow, Jennings will join an exclusive group of footballers to have won multiple triple crown titles.
He first achieved the feat with Vasco Da Gama in 1997-98, the last local club to complete the sweep.
?Everybody is ready to rock and roll, and we expect tomorrow to be a very difficult match for us,? he said. ?It?s now all up to us to try and gain what it is we have worked very hard for. And if we achieve it, then of course we have gained. But if we don?t, then it?s something we will have to learn from and move on from there.?
A Village win will see the Reds move level with PHC Zebras and Somerset Trojans for overall most wins in the history of the competition, now celebrating its 50th anniversary.
North Village?s youth squad will kick off tomorrow?s proceedings at the NSC when they take on Boulevard in the Under-18 KO Cup Final, while Lady Cougars will defend their FA Cup crown against challengers PHC in the Women?s Final.
