Trappers trounced
Graduating from Commercial to First Division cricket, IFP Leg Trappers knew there would be lots of firsts for them.
However, last Sunday's was one first they could have done without.
Playing a league match against Flatts at Police Field, the newcomers were bundled out for a meagre 36 runs and would have suffered greater humiliation but for the 20 extras that were the bulk of their score - 16 wides, three no-balls and a leg bye.
It was an experience that club president and spokesman James Broadbent confessed left them “shell-shocked for about an hour”.
“There's no excuses. It was just that we batted terribly. We were missing three of our main batsmen but we should still have done a lot better.
“It's the first time nobody in our team has reached double figures and it's our lowest-ever score by a long way,” he said.
The outcome was “a real disappointment” given that Trappers had bowled and fielded well and, at one stage, had Flatts at 110 for eight.
The latter were eventually dismissed for 154 before Trappers had their turn at the crease. Graham Strange top-scored for Trappers with six not out.
“We were very confident. Their bowling was good but it was just one of those things,” said Broadbent, sounding still mystified at how his team perished so dramatically.
Trappers have vowed to rebound from this dismal performance so Police - their opponents this Sunday - should be warned.
