Treble-chasing Cougars ready to bare teeth in cup

Premier Division leaders Devonshire Cougars and fellow title contenders Boulevard will exchange blows in what will be the first of back-to-back meetings between the two urban rivals when FA Cup quarter-final action takes prominence tomorrow.

The two clubs collide head on at BAA Field tomorrow and again next Tuesday night in the Friendship Trophy fully wary of what?s at stake ? the coveted but elusive triple crown haul of league, FA Cup and Friendship Trophy.

Blazers got the better of Cougars during a league encounter last November, the red, green and gold of Boulevard prevailing 3-1 at BAA Field. And given territorial advantage, Blazers ? four time FA Cup winners ? should be slightly favoured heading into tomorrow?s top cup tie.

But playing in familiar surroundings doesn?t necessarily guarantee success, especially coming up against an explosive Cougars team containing the likes of Heys Wolfe and Raymond Beach.

The dynamic duo have accounted for the bulk of their team?s 32 league goals this season with Beach, the chief protagonist in attack, currently on a red-hot scoring streak which has seen last season?s Most Valuable Player and top poacher bang home nine goals in the last three games ? unprecedented in recent league history.

Cougars will again rely on the experience of player/coach Shawn Smith in defence and magic of captain Kwame Steede and Domico Coddington in the middle of the park while Blazers? captain Melchisedec Gibbons, Torry Davis, Robert Wilson and Raymond Burgess are expected to shoulder the brunt of the load for a team now within striking distance of recapturing past glories.

?We have to play Cougars three times and all roads lead to us. They have to go through us for the league, FA Cup and Friendship Trophy first,? noted Blazers? manager Amon Brown.

?Our confidence is always high. But at the same time we cannot take Cougars lightly because they have scored ten-goals in their last two matches and have the league?s top marksman in Raymond Beach. He and Heys (Wolfe) are like a dynamic duo and we will have to keep an eye on them along with Kwame Steede, who I rate as one of the best midfielders on the Island.?

Brown is confident Blazers will prevail over Cougars.

?We have already beaten them once and so we are going to try and come up with the same strategy and try to adapt to whatever situations arise on the day,? he added.

In what could possibly turn out to be an all-out war, newly promoted First Division clubs Somerset Trojans and PHC Zebras will put their cup pride on the line at Somerset Cricket Club.

Both clubs have won the prestigious FA Cup a record nine-times and a win for either team tomorrow would put them a step closer to becoming the first team to record ten-triumphs in the prestigious competition.

Zebras were edged 2-1 by Trojans two weeks ago during an action packed league contest to set the stage for what again promises to be another pulsating 90 minutes of football between the two perennial rivals.

?I think it is going to be another close match. Obviously it was pleasing to get the recent win over them but at the same time that has now given them another incentive to do well against us,? noted Zebras? coach Mark Wade.

?So we are expecting another tough match against Somerset and hopefully we can come away with the desired result.?

Meanwhile, other FA Cup quarter-final matches see Premier Division frontrunners Dandy Town host First Division St.George?s at St.John?s Road while 2001 FA Cup champions Devonshire Colts have a tricky tie against giant-slayers St.David?s at Lord?s.
