Trojans ruin Rangers? week
An ever-alert Rohaan Simons knocked a bizarre and controversial goal past brother Gerald to complete a week of misery for Southampton Rangers.
With the game evenly poised at 1-1, Karl Roberts hit a speculative effort from distance which looked to be going safely out for a goal kick.
But just as Trojans coach Dennis Brown was getting up to chastise his captain, the ball was held up in a gust of wind and bounced back off the crossbar to Simons, who was running in from distance, and the livewire striker simply slotted home from 15 yards to put Trojans ahead - a deserved lead.
Rangers players proceeded to lose their heads, claiming an off-side, and during the next nine minutes they lost Janeiro Tucker for a petulant foul combined with some abusive language and another goal as substitute Anthony Webb took advantage of the indiscipline from the home side to put the result beyond doubt.
In a week when they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Commercial side MR Onions, Rangers really could have done without coming up against the unpredictable but dangerous Trojans, and from the outset played like a side short on confidence.
In the opening exchanges, Trojans looked the stronger side and Simons was unlucky not to beat his brother after just five minutes after one of his typical jinking runs.
But the visitors didn?t have to wait long for the opener, with Dwight Basden making the most of a mix up at the back to poke teasingly home past the keeper from 19 yards.
Janeiro Tucker, playing his usual game of tricks, arguments and occasional bursts of ability, had Timmy Figureido working hard with a half-volley which the athletic keeper did well to get hold of at the second attempt.
The first half was all Trojans, although the final pass was often lacking and a second goal just didn?t look like it was coming any time soon.
After the break, and a change of shirts, Rangers looked a little more comfortable although it always appeared it was going to take something a bit special for them to grab an equaliser.
But it came with 21 minutes left on the clock, when Janeiro Tucker managed to throw his large frame at a low cross and nudge the ball goalwards, Darren Minors and Figureido fell each other to get the ball away, with the referee finally crediting Minors with the own goal after the ball trickled agonisingly into the net.
Janeiro then thundered a header against the bar as Rangers suddenly looked alive and capable of winning the game.
But a mix of their goalkeeper?s lack of concentration and a freak gust of wind changed everything and handed Trojans the win and left Rangers wandering if things could get any worse.
The threat of rain, which eventually came in the second half, was enough to decimate the crowd but the game, the final nine minutes aside, probably wasn?t deserving of too many more.
Five points adrift at the bottom of the table and with talisman Janeiro Tucker now facing a suspension, things can?t really get any worse for the side from the Oval.
