Trojans take on Town in bid for cup history

In what will be a repeat of the 1989-90 final, Dandy Town and Somerset Trojans will lock horns in the FA Cup semi-finals on March 14.

Trojans, bidding to become the first-ever First Division club to win the coveted showpiece, defeated Town 2-0 at the National Sports Centre 14 years ago to extend their overall tally of wins in the prestigious competition to nine.

Since then, however, the West Enders have been unable to find their way back to the carpet while Town have appeared in four finals but have failed on each occasion to duplicate their cup winning form of 1986-87.

"There is no pressure on us . . . we are the underdogs," declared Trojans coach Dennis Brown following yesterday's draw.

"We just have to prepare ourselves as we do for any other game. My players know what is at stake but I am not going to say anything in the press to boost Dandy Town's confidence other than to say the best team will win on the day."

Though Town will be heavily favoured to book a third FA Cup final appearance in five seasons, coach Devar Boyles refuses to read anything into Trojans' lower status.

"Being drawn against Somerset is not a preference because at this stage of the competition there are no easy games. Certainly Somerset represent the unknown for us in that we haven't played them this season. They have quality players in their team and a coach (Brown) who is doing all the right things," he noted.

Given both teams have not met this season, Boyles said it was difficult to assess Trojans' "strengths and weaknesses".

He added: "We must prepare properly particularly because we haven't seen some of their player's development or growth. They probably have some new players in their team and we don't know whether they are playmakers or out and out strikers . . . but it is very exciting because they probably don't know us either. So hopefully on the day we can put in a good performance and get a good result."

Bermuda Football Association, meanwhile, have yet to be announce a venue for the Trojans-Town showdown.

In the other Cup semi-final, Devonshire Cougars and Devonshire Colts will square off at a date and venue still to be determined.

Cougars have yet to win the coveted prize, finishing runners up in 1978-79 and again in 1994-95 while four-time winners Colts last triumphed in 2000-01.

"Every game is a challenge . . . and we look forward to this match against Colts as another challenge," commented Devonshire Recreation Club secretary Ellsworth Christopher upon learning of his club's semi-final opponents.

"We are not going in to the match overly-confident but we look forward to the game as a challenge and hope that everything remains tidy so that nothing stands in our way of going into the finals," added Christopher, alluding to last season's debacle which saw Cougars ousted from the final for fielding an ineligible player in a semi-final contest against First Division club Prospect which they won.

In women's FA Cup semi-final action, last year's beaten finalists Rude Girls will take on Dandy Stars on March 14 in a contest which will precede the Trojans-Town clash. Bisys Royals meet PHC in the remaining women's semi-final, again at a date and venue still to be decided.

"We do have some challenges based on the availability of fields and Bermuda's World Cup commitment with Montserrat. But hopefully they will be resolved before next Monday," explained BFA league and cup competitions chairman Charles Clarke.
