Tyrone picks up another award

Young Bermudian long jumper Tyrone Smith has been named the University of Missouri-Rolla?s male athlete of the year.

The 20-year-old son of Wendy Parker posted some of the best jumps in the NCAA Division II ranks this season, with a best effort of 25ft 8ins.

Smith finished fourth in the long jump at the prestigious NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March and enters this weekend?s Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Outdoor Championships as the top-ranked long jumper in Division II.

His performance during the indoor season earned him two major awards, as he was named as the Great Lakes region?s top field athlete and the GLVC?s ?Male Athlete of the Year? in track.

The university?s Bullman Award for athlete of the year is given to somebody who has displayed outstanding character and excelled both on the playing field and in the classroom.
