Umpire assault reported to Board
Domestic cricket plunged to new depths last weekend after allegations an umpire was physically assaulted by a player on a bad-tempered afternoon at Sea Breeze Oval.
The incident ? one of several disciplinary problems in the match ? took place on the same day the national side returned home triumphant from their Americas Championship success and has been included in the umpire?s report.
Richard (Red) Burrows was standing in the heated Premier Division Knockout Cup game between Bailey?s Bay and Somerset on Sunday and has accused Somerset?s Reid Jones of putting him in a headlock and dragging him into the opposition changing room.
Jones is then alleged to have sworn at the umpire and told him he did not want him to officiate in a Somerset fixture again.
The Bermuda Cricket Board confirmed yesterday they have received a report ? without confirming the identity of its author ? and have placed it in the hands of the disciplinary committee headed by Gary Fray.
Under the BCB?s revamped Code of Conduct, which was introduced at the beginning of last season, any physical assault of a player or umpire is deemed a Level Four offence ? the most serious ? which carries with it anywhere between a ten match and a lifetime ban.
And Jones? alleged behaviour was not the only incident of note included in Burrows? match report.
Somerset seamer David Gibbs has also been cited for abusive language towards the umpire after he was given out caught behind, while Bay veteran and former national team legend Noel Gibbons has been accused of abusive language and threatening behaviour.also understands that Gibbs smashed the stumps out of the ground with his bat in frustration, although this incident has not been included in the report.
Elsewhere, Willow Cuts bowler Sheroy Fubler has been reported to the governing body by the Island?s top umpire Roger Dill after being removed from the attack on Sunday against Cleveland for delivering a succession of beamers.
?The Bermuda Cricket Board can confirm that an umpire?s report relating to players? conduct was received yesterday and the matter has been referred to the disciplinary committee who will investigate the matter further,? the BCB said in a statement.
?We are not able to comment on the specifics contained in the report as this may prejudice the investigations. The BCB takes all matters relating to a player?s behaviour extremely seriously and if any individual?s behaviour is found to be in contravention of the Code of Conduct that individual will be dealt with accordingly.?
