Unbeaten Trojans aim for another spot in final
Somerset Trojans are heavily favoured to snap a perennial jinx at the Den tonight and get past PHC Zebras in the first of two Martonmere Cup semi finals scheduled for early this week.
Trojans have remained unbeaten so far this season, and appear on the verge of advancing to a second straight Martonmere Cup final ? and unprecedented 12th overall.
Apart from semi-final hero Cofield Robinson, who is currently abroad with Trojans? assistant team coach Paul Scope with the Island?s Under-20 national team, Somerset will be at full strength.
Robinson jumped off the bench less than a week ago to fire Trojans through to the final four by scoring the deciding goal against Boulevard at the same venue.
And with Zebras? ranks further depleted with the loss of coach Kyle Lightbourne, full back Marquel Waldron and forward Cecoy Robinson, Trojans? stiffest challenge tonight could turn out to be the cup semi-final jinx that has plagued them at the Den since the days George Brangman wore a Somerset uniform.
?I don?t believe in any jinx. And so we will be ready!? Trojans? coach Dennis Brown warned.
Zebras? coach Lightbourne, Waldron and Robinson are also currently in Haiti with the Under-20 national squad, while overseas -based Kevin Richards, Jahnai Raynor and Robert Richardson have all opted not to return for tonight?s key clash with arch-rivals Trojans.
Yet despite the absentees, Lightbourne is confident his side can get the job done.
?It?s going to be a tough game for us. Somerset are undefeated this season,? he said. ?So hopefully we can raise our game and put away our chances.?
If there?s one positive that Zebras have in their favour, it will be the return of inspirational forward Kevin Lambe from injury.
?He will be available for the match,? Lightbourne confirmed. ?Kevin has been a big miss, but his absence has also given others an opportunity.?
Zebras could have to rely on players such as Lonnie Bascome ? a thorn in Dandy Town?s side last week ? and also speed merchant Mike Williams to ruin Somerset?s plans and advance to a first Martonmere Cup final since 2002-03.
Tonight?s opening Women?s Konica Cup semi-final also promises to be exciting as St.George?s? coach Vance Brown will be pitted against his former team, Lady Cougars.
