Veteran Davis eases through

The star status of Louisiana native Dennis Cross was shortlived in the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational as the fourth-seeded American suffered a second round defeat at the hands of Bermudian veteran Vernal Davis, 6-3, 6-3, at the Coral Beach Tennis Club yesterday.

Cross kept pace with the former champion for the first three games, breaking Davis during the process to level the first set at 3-3, but Davis raised the level of his play a notch while running off the next three games for the first set.

The second set was almost a repeat of the first as Cross succumbed in less than an hour.

Meanwhile, the top ranked pair of Nanny Vanneck and Ted Hoehn made short work of Pat Siddle and Mike Keyes in the Century Mixed Doubles, winning 6-1, 6-0 while fifth seeds Gill Butterfield and Sandy Frith-Brown ousted Debbie and Joe Kelly in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, and sixth seeds Betty Orteig and Earl Leader defeated Beth and Pat O'Kelly 6-2, 6-4.
