Veteran Ron celebrates hole-in-one
Ron Smith, a veteran with over three decades of golf tucked under his belt, realised every golfer?s dream during the Gosling?s Invitational at Belmont Hills yesterday, making a hole-in-one.
Paired with John Carr and Blip Morris, the 56-year-old financial controller hit the jackpot at the par-three seventh hole.
And if that wasn?t enough, with his handicap Smith received a stroke for a net zero.
Smith recalled: ?John (Carr) had hit the ball very close (to the pin), maybe to within five feet and I said to him jokingly off the tee, ?you had better go and mark that?.
?I then hit a good five iron off the tee that stayed right on line with the flag, bounced once and then rolled in the cup.?
An elated Morris was first to react.
?Blip (Morris) shouted ?it?s in the hole? and I thought to myself just great! A first-ever hole in one after playing 32 years of golf. I guess you can say I?ve had a lot of practice,? Smith smiled.
?It feels absolutely great and I actually played very well for about five holes afterwards until the adrenaline stopped. Then I played like an idiot for the rest of the round. I birdied the next hole (eighth) and didn?t drop any shots for about six holes before I started to get back to normal.?
Smith, who began yesterday tenth in the senior division, carded a 19-over-par 89 for a three-day tournament total of 259, dropping him to 15th among the seniors.
