Veterans end year on top

Veterans Donna Bradshaw and Sam Maybury end the year as the Island's top singles players, following the release of the latest Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association rankings.

Bradshaw, the dominant player in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has had a highly successful return to the tournament scene this year, winning two tournaments and coming runner-up in two others.

Prospects for the womens game are bright for next year with the welcome return of Danielle Paynter, the improving Deborah Cheng, and the overseas-based youngsters Zara De Silva, Sasha Fisher and Ashley Brooks all looking to challenge Bradshaw.

Maybury will take a back seat due to suspension next year and with the established stars Michael Way, Ricky Mallory and James Collieson rarely venturing on a singles court and Jensen Bascome overseas, the battle for the mens top spot appears to be wide-open.

In ladies doubles, Kelly Holland's 100 percent success rate makes her a clear number one, closely followed by Gill Butterfield, Deborah Cheng, Lavern Stowe and Wendy Gelhay.

In mens doubles, Roger Marshall edges out Ricky Mallory for the top spot ahead of Chris Harris, Martin Zolnai and Mark Cordeiro.

Top mixed rankings go to Lavern Stowe (ladies) and Ricky Mallory (men). Bradshaw leads the senior ladies with Gill Butterfield. Meanwhile, Earl Leader tops Eldon Daniels for the senior men's ranking.
