Veterans' matches go down to wire

Both the Men and Ladies Veterans events in the Fast Forward Freight National Squash Championships could not have been more closely fought with both titles being decided on countback.

In the Men's championship, in a round robin formatted event, the James Vernon Gardner Trophy was won by Tony Prentice who finished with one more game than Kirk Caza, who in turn finished with one more than last year's winner John Stout.

The Ladies title was won by Christine Barnes who finished on equal games with Denise Kyme but with four more points.

Liz Martin, despite her victory over Kyme, finished one game behind to take third place.

Number one seed Blair Quested won men's second division over 14-year-old third seed Michael Shrubb.

Shrubb, who is the current Under-15 National Champion, couldn't quite produce an answer to Quested's deft touch and placement. The fitter Shrubb did, however, improve throughout the match and in the end lost narrowly 9-1, 9-4, 10-9.

The Consolation Final was even closer going the full five games before Alistair McNeish took victory over Mike Harvey 9-5, 4-9, 4-9, 9-2, 9-1.

Kerry Haslam won a seesaw match over Alison Harvey in the Ladies Division Two final.

The match, that was contested early in the day, came down to the wire before Haslam could claim her title 9-6, 4-9, 9-2, 4-9, 9-4.

The Consolation final saw Trish Ashton beat Nicola Swain 9-2, 9-3, 5-9, 9-6. In Men's Division Three action Damion Henderson took the title from James Schofield 4-9, 9-1, 9-6, 9-6 and in an even contest Rick Aspin beat Andrew Stevenson in the Consolation Final 9-6, 5-9, 0-9, 9-7, 9-4.

Number Two seed Lucy Chung reversed the seeding by defeating number one seed Sarah Fenwick in Ladies Division Three.

Fenwick started out well before Chung took control to win 8-10, 9-2, 9-0, 9-0.

Diane Elliot was a deserved Consolation Champion beating Chung 9-4, 9-3, 9-6 in their final.

Andrew Robinson reaffirmed his number one ranking in the Junior Under-17 Championship by defeating Michael Shrubb in straight games 9-2, 9-0, 9-3.

Robinson has been nursing an injury and was forced to withdraw from the Men's Division One and played intelligently to dominate the tenacious Shrubb.

Under-13 number one Robert Maycock played up a division to win the Under-17 Consolation over Caty Luckhurst 9-5, 9-0, 9-1.

The Junior Under-13 title was won by Mark James over Jeff Olson 9-2, 9-1, 9-5, with the Consolation Final being won by Alex Furtado over Scott West 9-1, 9-7, 4-9, 9-4.
