Vets clean up in Caribbean

Bermuda's veteran swimmers finished the Latin American and Caribbean Masters Swimming Championship in Barbados with a host of medals.

The event was held at the Barbados Aquatic Centre outside Bridgetown and featured 16 Latin American and Caribbean nations.

The first competition last Monday was the 800 metres freestyle and Susan Pitt (57) was the first Bermudian to swim, winning a bronze with a time of 18.27.71.

Chris Smith (71) had a great race with a time of 13.17.17 and won silver, out-touched by ex-Olympian Aram Boghossian of Brazil at 13.14.84. Both were well under the previous LatyCar record of 13.32.86. Ian Maule (38) also picked up a bronze with a time of 11.11.51.

In the 200m individual medley, Margaret Marshall (59) picked up a gold while Lesley Balcombe (38) and Kevin Insley (39) both won silvers.

The final event of the day was the 100m backstroke in which Balcombe picked up her second silver medal with a time of 1.22.44. Trevor Nicholls (71) won a bronze and Duncan Newby (52), with a great swim of 1.22.59, won gold.

In the 1,500 metres, swum earlier, Smith and Insley both won golds, Smith's time of 24.32.13 being a new LatyCar record. Colleen Nelson (54) with a time of 23.38.62 won silver.

Tuesday's first event was the 200m breaststroke and Smith picked up his second gold with a time of 3.52.01. Nichols added the silver. Insley also won a silver against strong competition with a time of 2:51.28.

In the 50m backstroke Ann Maule (69), with a time of 1.01.68, won a silver and Brenda McLean (52), with tough competition, finished in a time of 52.86 for fourth. Newby, meanwhile, won bronze with a time of 38.16.

In the 100m butterfly Marshall won gold while Balcombe won silver.

In the final event of the day, the 200m freestyle, Ann Maule, Nicholls and Insley all won silver medals, while Susan Pitt won bronze and Ian Maule placed fourth.

The following day Marshall earned a silver medal in the 400m individual medley. Smith won gold with a time of 7.58.78, his third Latycar record, and Insley won gold with a time of 5.35.17.

In the 50m butterfly Anne Maule and Marshall both won silver medals, Lesley Balcombe won bronze, while Newby placed fifth and Ian Maule 11th.

In the 100m breaststroke McLean swam strongly to finish fourth, while Nichols and Insley won silver medals. In the final event, the 200m backstroke, both Balcombe and Newby won gold medals in exciting races, Balcombe with a time of 2.55.94 and Newby with 3.06.67.

Ann Maule swam a strong race the next morning in the 400m freestyle, winning a gold medal. She finished 18 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Smith, 6.25.32, and Ian Maule, 5.15.83, also swam strong races against strong competition, both winning silver medals.

Brenda McLean swam a strong 50m breaststroke in 50.38 finishing fourth.

In the 100m freestyle, Pitt won bronze while McLean was sixth and Nichols fourth.

In the day's final event, the 200m butterfly, Marshall took the silver and Smith the gold.
