Village eye triple crown

Perennial cup kings North Village will be playing for more than pride when they take on Dandy Town in tomorrow?s Friendship Trophy final at the National Sports Centre.

Village are bidding to add the second jewel of the coveted triple crown championship (League, FA Cup and Friendship Trophy) to the Premier Division championship they clinched nearly two weeks ago and lay claim to a third straight Friendship win over Hornets.

Possessing one of the proudest cup winning traditions in domestic football, Village defeated Hornets in the 1996-97 and 2000-01 Friendship Trophy finals at the NSC.

Town have yet to beat their cross-town rivals in all competitions thus far this season and, as such, will enter tomorrow?s contest as underdogs.

And with the coveted triple crown within Village?s grasp, Hornets can expect to find their work cut out for them up on the ?carpet? against a Reds side that banged in 44 league goals and only conceded ten during a successful league campaign in which they wrapped up a seventh Premier Division title overall.

Village last won the triple crown in 1977-78.

?The guys are fired up and ready to go. This is a chance for our guys to make some history and so they are very much looking forward to giving it their best shot,? stated Reds? coach Dwayne (Streaker) Adams.

Adams, who won two Friendship Trophy winners? medals as a player at Village, now hopes to win another as a coach in his first year at the helm.

?The guys are very hungry and ready to get out there and showcase their skills,? he added. ?And at the end of the day everything we have achieved prior will mean nothing when we show up to play on Sunday. This is a one-off situation and absolutely no room for error.?

Adams refused to divulge his starting eleven or disclose whether or not star midfielder Tuarean Manders had returned for the occasion. However, key players Vernon Tankard and Jemeiko Jennings did train with the squad this week and could be included in the Reds? line-up tomorrow.

Village, inaugural Friendship champions in 1965-66, are gunning for a seventh overall Friendship title in what will be their ninth appearance in the final.

Town, also expected to be at full strength, are bidding for a fifth Friendship title since 1990-01.

And Hornets? coach Devarr Boyles is confident his team have what it takes to burst Village?s triple crown bubble.

?We have the attitude and belief that when we play we have the ability to get something from any match,? he said. ?All athletes at all levels live for the opportunity to play and win finals, and we are no different.

?We know as well as all our opponents that we have the potential to produce good performances. We are a top club and top clubs try to put in performances that lead to positions where they can be successful.?

Tomorrow will be Town?s ninth appearance in a Friendship Trophy final and sixth cup final against Village in the past five years ? the Reds emerging victorious on each occasion.

Hornets are also gunning for a seventh major cup title overall in six years.

Meanwhile, Paget Lions will enter tomorrow?s Shield Final as firm favourites over first-time finalists X Roads Warriors at the NSC.

Yet Lions will be wary of the fact they were considered the underdogs when they clinched a first-ever Shield title over highly fancied Devonshire Cougars in 1995-06.

?We hadn?t won a single game that season,? recalled Paget Community Club president Michael Stovell. ?Cougars had won the league and were heavily favoured to win. But we proved then that on any given day any team is capable of winning.

?So we expect X Roads to also be tough because they really don?t have anything to lose. But our game plan is to go out there and run at them. And if we can get on top of them early and capitalise on our chances, then we should be okay.

?X Roads are not going to sit back and let us come at them. We?ve beaten them twice already this season and so I expect they will want to turn the tide on us. But we will come prepared to play.?

Lions are bidding to become the second straight First Division club behind Ireland Rangers to win the league and Shield double.
