Village in final after WIA refuse replay

North Village have been awarded a place in the Commercial League Knockout final after West Indian Association refused to comply with the decision of a specially convened league committee that their rain-affected semi-final be replayed.

At Sea Breeze Oval on September 5, WIA?s reply to Village?s first innings score of 261 for four was terminated by a prolonged burst of rain in the afternoon with the former on 212 for four after 31 overs.

With 71 overs invested in the match, WIA skipper John McConnie insisted that the Duckworth/Lewis formula be used to determine the winner ? WIA in this case ? while North Village captain Wendell Lindsay suggested the game be replayed.

Despite an invitation to present his case, McConnie was not present at the meeting held on Wednesday night and after prolonged discussion, the committee adopted the view of North Village.

The decision by WIA to boycott the replay came as no surprise to those who have been following the saga closely, with McConnie stressing to last week that he would refuse the offer of a replay point blank.

?There is no way we are going to agree to replay the game,? he said. ?We got through over 70 overs in that match and it is ridiculous to me that you would consider replaying a game that has lasted that long.?

The league?s executive committee are yet to decide when to reschedule the final between Village and Forties, but said yesterday that an announcement would be made shortly.

The Evening Cricket League finals took place at the National Sports Centre recently with The Associates triumphing over the West XI ? skippered by league organiser Stephen West ? by only one run in the First Division clash.

Replying to the Associates total of 162 for nine in their allocated 28 overs, the nail-biting run chase ended in the very last over with the West XI all out for 161.

Blake West recorded the best bowling figures, taking three wickets, while David DeSilva contributed 62 runs.

Kian Wookey was adjudged man-of-the-match.

In the Second Division final, the Department of Health Mighty Ducks defeated Cabinet Colleagues by nine wickets in a one-sided encounter.

Batting first, Cabinet Colleagues scraped together 106 runs in their 28 overs while the Mighty Ducks stormed to victory in reply in only 17 overs at the crease.

Allan Richardson was man-of-the-match following an impressive all round performance of 50 not out and three scalps with the ball.
