Village ready to celebrate
It has been almost a quarter of a century since North Village last basked in the glory of winning a league championship title, but the long drought could come to an end at Bernard Park tomorrow where Village meet struggling Wolves.
The last time Village hoisted the coveted title was back in 1978, a year the Red Devils swept all before them as Larry Smith's team completed a clean triple crown sweep of league, FA Cup and Friendship Trophy honours.
They lifted the latter trophy without so much as scoring a goal as opponents Southampton Rangers walked off the pitch in protest of a disputed penalty two minutes before the end of regulation time.
Now, some 24 years on, Scott Morton and company find themselves in position to emulate that feat.
They lead the Premier Division by four points, needing just three more to secure the championship, have already earned a spot in the Friendship Trophy final, and are scheduled to face minnows Somerset Eagles in the FA Cup semi-final in two weeks' time.
But first things first and of tomorrow's clash, coach Morton warned: “At this stage, Wolves can be very unpredictable.
“They are definitely a team that we are aware of because of the quality that they have in their coach (Dennis Brown) and players.
“Wolves can never be taken for granted regardless of how many games they have lost.”
In contrast to Village's turn of fortunes of late, Wolves have faded into obscurity during the second half of the campaign since winning their first-ever Dudley Eve Trophy back in January.
And up until last Sunday when they defeated already-relegated St. George's 3-0, nobody in the Wolves camp had too much to shout about.
Even now Wolves find themselves in a dog-fight to avoid joining St. George's in the First Division next season.
And they might be wary of the fact that 24 years ago it was Village who sealed their relegation from the then First Division after a 2-0 win at St. David's.
Meanwhile, second-placed Devonshire Colts travel to Somerset Cricket Club to take on Somerset Trojans in a match in which both teams will be hoping to regain that winning formula after succumbing to defeat last weekend.
Of all the teams in action tomorrow, PHC may encounter the least difficulty as they travel east to Wellington Oval where they will take on an already doomed St. George's who may be content to just go through the motions.
In the First Division, leaders Boulevard take on Southampton Rangers at BAA Field, while second-placed Somerset Eagles enjoy a rest just two weeks before their FA Cup semi-final showdown.
Hamilton Parish host Paget at St. David's while Young Men's Social Club take on Prospect at Bernard Park.
In another interesting match-up, Ireland Rangers play host to St. David's at Malabar field.
