Village still top of the class
North Village wrapped up their defence of the Premier Division title yesterday and Somerset Trojans and PHC slipped through the relegation trapdoor as the 2002-2003 Premier league season came to an end.
Village's 2-0 victory over fifth place finishers Dandy Town was enough to secure Scott Morton's team top honours.
They had, in fact, only needed a draw at the start of play and would have taken the trophy even if they had lost as a result of Devonshire Cougars shock thrashing at the hands of the Trojans.
There cannot be many teams who won 6-0 against a title chaser on the final day of the season and were still relegated come 4.45 p.m. But that was the case with Mark Trott's men who had not been able to summon up similar efforts when it really mattered earlier in the term.
At least they were spared the ignominy of being the bottom of the barrel, that unwanted distinction going to Mark Wade's PHC Zebras who lost a crunch battle with Devonshire Colts 2-1 at Somerset CC.
PHC won just three games all season, drawing three and losing the remaining eight to end the term on 12 points.
Colts' win saw them transformed from relegation candidates at 3 p.m. to fourth place finishers at the end of the match.
Elsewhere, Somerset Eagles 3-1 come-from-behind win over Boulevard Blazers was enough to lift Marc Bean's club away from the drop zone, while John Rebello's squad, despite yesterday's poor performance, finished a very respectable third on their return to the top flight.
