Village to swoop for Montella
ROME (Reuters) Italy striker Vincenzo Montella has hinted he might leave AS Roma despite scoring one of the goals of the season on Sunday to keep them on course for their first league title in 18 years.
Montella scored Roma's 64th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with AC Milan at the Olympic Stadium.
Picking up the ball on the right flank, he drifted inside, looked up to pass, and then sidestepped a challenge from Federico Giunti before curling a superb shot into the top corner of the Milan net from 20 yards.
The goal earned countless replays on Italian TV and praise from team-mates and opponents across the country.
But Montella, who had come off the substitutes' bench at half-time to ignite Roma's recovery, was downcast. "I didn't take it well when I learned I'd be on the bench," the former Sampdoria forward was quoted as saying in Gazzetta dello Sport. "It was very disappointing.
"I'm fed up, tired, I can't do it any more. I found out at 6:30 p.m. when the coach gave us the line-up. It's a choice that will make me think even harder about my future.
"When the time comes to decide I will remember what happened today. I've always been honest and I don't want to hide my thoughts."
Montella has spent much of the season on the bench but has done more than any other player to bolster Roma's flagging title challenge in recent months.
He has scored 10 goals in the last 12 league matches even though he has played a full 90 minutes just twice.
Those goals, many scored in the final quarter of the match, have earned Fabio Capello's side nine points.
Roma lead Serie A by four points from Juventus and five from Lazio with two matches to play. They will wrap up the title if they win in two weeks' time in Naples Montella's home city.
With just six points at stake, the run-ins for the three title rivals become crucial.
Roma have arguably the most difficult fixtures they face a Napoli side desperate for a win to avoid relegation and then play in-form Parma at the Olympic Stadium on the final day.
But Parma now have nothing to play for this season having clinched Italy's fourth Champions League berth with a 2-1 win at Lecce.
