Village wired for Cup run

North Village president Shervin Dill must have had a little smile to himself when the draw was made for the first round of the FA Cup yesterday.

For the Red Devils will be taking on none other than Cable and Wireless, sponsors of the Premier League side.

The draw was made at the headquarters of the Bermuda Football Association yesterday afternoon and a number of potentially mouthwatering ties were thrown up.

Dill said his club would be giving their opposition full respect.

"We are taking the game seriously for sure and we are looking for a very positive result," he said. "We have had a fairly successful run for the past couple of years. We were champions two years and runners up last year against Devonshire Colts, so we have a positive attitude going into it.

"It's a good draw. But we will not underestimate our opponents and we will take the game seriously."

Dill said he hoped a good cup run would rub off on the league campaign.

"We are looking forward to more success this season and we certainly have a good plan on the table as far as what we want to achieve. We are looking for the ultimate - the league title. We are gunning for it," he said. "We have never been far off but it has been since 1977-78 since we have had a league title. It has been that long."

In an all Premier tie Dandy Town, league champions last year, will take on PHC at St John's Field.

Relegated Southampton take on promoted St George's in another key clash, while Somerset meet Vasco Mariners.

The ties take place on October 14 and 21 and the full draw is on Page 16.
