Volleyballers on song at `Beanpot'

Bermuda's men's volleyball team travelled to Boston at the weekend for the annual "Beanpot" Tournament at MIT.

This was slated as the team's second warm up tournament before competing in the Canadian Nationals in Ottawa in May and their ultimate goal of the 2003 NatWest Island Games in Guernsey in June.

The team came out firing on all cylinders, completing pool play with a four and four record, splitting each two game match with all of their opponents.

Bermuda's attack was lead by Mark Coy and Mike Gazzard who racked up kills of 29 and 25 respectively through pool play.

With a passing percentage of 73 percent on the day, Coy and Jon Gazzard enabled setter David Gletsu to put on a setting clinic. Rarely did his hitters encounter more than one blocker in front of them, and they enjoyed a variety of combinations set by the former Canadian national team setter.

On the defensive side of the ball, Andrew Soares and Mark Hamilton consistently closed blocks and shut down the oppositions hitters, recording blocks of ten and nine respectively through pool play.

Bermuda's pool play record tied them for third and earned them a one game sudden-death match to enter the playoffs.

Bermuda came together as a team, utilising a fresh Gary Leblanc on the right side off the bench, and they had no trouble in beating Courtside Bangers 25-18. The men then quickly disposed of their quarterfinal opponents Harpoon, with a decisive 30-23 win.

With the women's team and other supporters on the sidelines, the men entered the semifinals against Granite State, a team they had split with earlier in the day in round robin play.

Bermuda battled hard, but unfortunately after a long day of match play the tanks were empty and they succumbed in the best of three match, 21-25 and 18-25.
