`We should have done better' says Lewin

Bermuda's top female sailor Paula Lewin returned to the Island on Wednesday admitting that she was "disappointed" with her 10th place finish at the Sailing World Championships at the weekend.

Despite a strong start to the competition in the Yngling class, Lewin and her crew of sister Peta and Maria Lopez, ranked five in the world, fell well below their usual high standards in the last two races of the event, finishing 20th and 36th respectively.

"We started really well but in the last two races we just could not put it together," she said.

"Given our world ranking, we should have been challenging for a top-five finish at least."

Nevertheless, Lewin has little time to sit and reflect on what might have been as she will be flying out tomorrow to compete in the prestigious Women's Keel competition in Annapolis, Maryland.

This event takes place every four years and is a major fixture on the American sailing calendar.

Lewin will then have to prepare for the Gold Cup match racing regatta to be held in Hamilton Harbour next month, in which she won the women's division last year.

She remains confident that latter half of the year will go well.

"We have really good equipment this year at the Women's Keel and having finished third last year I am confident that we can go even better," she said.

"As for the Gold Cup, it would be difficult to improve on last year's performance where we won the women's division and placed seventh overall. But you never know what might happen and I am really looking forward to the competition."
