Wellman's the hero

Somerset Extros' Christmas Goodwill soccer tournament began with a bang at Somerset Cricket Club on Wednesday night.

In the opening fixture, Extros scraped by Valley FC 2-1 in an entertaining, aggressive match. Kevin Isaac put Valley ahead with a scorching shot before Michael Corday levelled via the penalty spot. Extros' Everett Wellman then popped up to settle the issue in the dying minutes.

In the nightcap, Dockyard Falcons and Prison Officers played to a scoreless draw as both missed a host of chances.

The tournament continues tonight at the same venue with Falcons taking on Valley in the opener at 7.00 p.m. while Extros meet Prison Officers at 9.00 p.m..

In a passing skills competition held between matches, new soccer balls and gift certificates from the Pro Shop were awarded to the winners in the three age groups. All gate receipts are in aid of Somerset Trojans' youth soccer programme.

Michael Corday is the tournament director and not Terry Corday as was reported in Monday's edition, while Hill Association are among the sponsors and not Hill Construction.
