There's a new game sweeping local basketball courts. And these guys can play!

A group of Canadian professional wheelchair basketball players are currently on the Island staging a series of exhibition matches and a clinic, to be held tomorrow for all local coaches, teachers and physically challenged hoopsters.

The five-day tour, sponsored by Windreach Recreational Village, started with an exhibition match at CedarBridge Academy before taking to the courts at Saltus Grammar School yesterday.

"The kids had an absolute blast," said Windreach spokesperson Miranda Mello.

"At first they were a bit intimidated by the looks of the wheelchairs - they didn't want to get in them. But by halfway through the first match when we were changing over players, some of them (kids) didn't want to leave the court. So they were really, really enthusiastic to get back on the court and play again."

Today's exhibition matches will take place at Dellwood Middle School from 9.40 a.m. to 10.20 a.m. and Bermuda High School for Girls from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Tomorrow's clinic will take place at Windreach Lower Car Park from 9.30 to 11 a.m. and again from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.

The clinic will culminate with the ever-popular slam dunk contest.

All participants are required to complete a liability waiver. There will also be interactive sessions for families.

All those wishing to register for the clinic can do so by calling 238-2469 for further information.
