Women take the title

Bermuda's ladies came away victorious from the Kitty Michael International Invitational Golf Tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia at the weekend, writes Matt Westcott.

After the first round of play the Bermuda team were in second place in the net standings and fifth in the gross.

On day two they improved to first in the net and second in the gross and those positions were held at the end of the deciding third day at the

Golden Horseshoe Golf Course.

As the tournament was a net event it meant the Islanders were the overall winners and scooped the Bermuda Bowl, beating Puerto Rico by six shots.

Reflecting on the win, team captain Shirley James said: "We had a strong team but the other teams are all very strong and it just depends on the competition.

"In the past we have won the gross, come second in the gross and won the net. But to actually win the net tournament was wonderful."

James said the `star' player had been Katyna Rabain.

"She had some wonderful scores in the first two days," she said. "She had an 84 and then a 79 and she had never broken 80 in her life before. She was really our star."

James was full of praise for not only Rabain, but the rest of her squad.

"The girls went out trying to win and trying to play the best they could," she said. "They cheered one another on. We had great team spirit. It was a team effort and not an individual one. People weren't going out trying to play for themselves, they were playing for the team.

"The conditions were wet and soggy because we had thunderstorms at night. It was quite difficult and suited long hitters better than short.

"That makes our win even better, to think that the girls could cope with bad conditions."
