Women?s team earn Gold Cup reprieve

Bermuda?s national women?s soccer team were given a Gold Cup reprieve this week ? reinstated into the competition despite being originally knocked out in May.

An extra-time defeat to the Dominican Republic earlier this year saw Vance Brown?s team dumped out of the tournament ? the female equivalent of the Digicel Cup ? after the first qualifying stage.

But a recent re-organisation of the tournament by Concacaf meant the second-placed finishers from the last group stage will get a chance to compete in the second and final qualifying round, pitting Bermuda against Jamaica?s Reggae Girlz and Haiti in early September.

?We?re delighted to get another chance,? said national coach Vance Brown.

?I think we showed last time we were good enough to go through but just couldn?t put the ball in the back of the net. Now we have another chance and although both Jamaica and Haiti are very good teams, I think we have the players to make a real impact.?

The three-game tournament takes place in Trinidad from September 6-10 and Brown is delighted that his side ? who have been training hard for some weeks now ? are getting another outing.

?It will be fantastic for our girls to be taking on the powerhouses of the Caribbean,? he continued.

?It is another stepping stone for us and we look to move the national programme forward.?

The women?s national team played in their first ever international competition in 2000 when they competed in the Gold Cup qualifiers and then didn?t venture overseas again until last year when they picked up a bronze medal in the Island Games in Shetland.

In May?s qualifiers, Brown?s team beat Turks & Caicos 4-0 and British Virgin Islands 4-1 before going down 3-1 to the Dominican Republic in extra-time to end up second in the group.
