Yana clinches Canada victory

Young Bermuda golfer Yana Ballantyne overcame an eight-shot deficit over the closing 18 holes, carding the day's lowest round en route to clinching the Sunice Junior Classic at the Eagle's Nest Golf Club in Maple, Ontario over the weekend.

It marked the 13-year-old Hamilton Parish resident's first win on the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) Tour.

Ballantyne fired an 82 to add to her opening round of 97 and finish the 36-hole tournament on 179 ? four shots ahead of runner-up Jacqueline Stol (183) and ten better than third-place finisher Julia Hodgson (189), both from Ontario.

"I could have done better on the back but I made par on most of the front," said Ballantyne. "But I'm pretty happy about the win."

The CJGA schedule continues this week with the Cedarhurst Junior Open at Cedarhurst Golf Club in Beaverton, Ontario today and tomorrow.

Meanwhile, two other top juniors, Blair Marshall and Nick Jones, enjoyed the experience of competing at the famed Torrey Pines course in San Diego, California at the Junior Worlds last week, but both failed to make the cut in the 15-17 age group.

Marshall, currently in school in the US, fired one good round of 74 ? two over par ? but coupled with two other rounds of 80 and 85, his total of 23-over-par meant he missed the three-day cut by nine shots.

Jones' lowest round was 77 and along with scores of 85 and 83, he finished six shots behind Marshall.

Eventual winner was 16-year-old Matthew Giles of Australia who shot a superb eight-under-par total for the four days on the tough 7,225 yard course. Yoshinori Fujimoto of Japan placed second at one-over-par, nine strokes back.

The annual tournament attracted some 1,000 junior players from over 40 countries.

Past winners of the event include Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and David Toms.
