Young athletes going for golds

Hundreds of the Island's future track and field prospects are set to converge on the National Sports Centre tomorrow for the fourth annual Bank Of Bermuda Foundation West End Athletic Club (WEAC) Schools Track and Field Challenge.

So far 20 schools have registered 200 athletes to participate in the annual track meet comprising of discus, long jump, triple jump, relays and sprint races over various distances.

A points system will determine first, second and third place winners in the Primary, Middle and Secondary school categories, with the school accumulating the most points to be presented with the commemorative Bank Of Bermuda Foundation School Shield.

WEAC have arranged for Frank Wolfsheimer of Delta Timing Group in Los Angeles to provide Finish Link timing equipment for the event, while here to assist Dr.Wolfsheimer is Wesleyan University assistant track and field coach Marchan Adkins.

"The International Amateur Federation will not accept record times set with hand held timing devices," explained WEAC president Clarence Smith.

"We want to continue to work towards developing our athletes so that they will be able to perform at an international level. Exposing them to international meet standards at an early age will help to prepare them for future overseas competitions," he added.

Smith also praised proud sponsors the Bank Of Bermuda Foundation for their continued support of the annual junior track and field meet which over the years has steadily increased.

"We are very grateful to the Bank Of Bermuda Foundation for their support of the event for the fourth consecutive year and we are pleased to be able to once again provide this positive venue for our young athletes to compete," he said.

Over the years, Bank Of Bermuda Foundation has helped numerous local charities that support the community, preserve heritage and develop the Island's youth in addition to offering scholarships.
