Youngsters fall short in opening Cup matches

Bermuda?s Junior Davis and Fed(eration) Cup teams began their campaigns on a losing note on Monday in El Salvador.

The girls ? Ashley Brooks and Jacklyn Lambert ? went down 2-1 to the Dominican Republic while their male counterparts succumbed by the same scoreline to Honduras in Junior Davis Cup action.

Drawn in Group Two along with Puerto Rico (seeded three), the Dominican Republic (seeded four) and Honduras, the Junior Fed Cup team battled hard against their Caribbean rivals in the round-robin competition.

Lambert lost 1-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 to Carol Zapata while Brooks swept past Francesca Segarelli 6-4, 6-2. Bermuda then fell short in the doubles with Brooks and Lambert being beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Segarelli and Juliana Guerra.

?The Bermuda girls were very competitive among this group although it appears to be the toughest, with two seeds. Tonight (Monday night) we reflected on the missed opportunities,? said coach Terry Smith in an e-mail to .

They were hoping, he added, for an improved showing against third-seeded Puerto Rico yesterday.

In the Junior Davis Cup, Bermuda fell to Honduras in their first Group One fixture which Smith described as being ?as dramatic? as the Fed Cup match.

For the winners, Keny Turcios trounced Bermuda?s Na?im Azhar 6-0, 6-1 before returning with Angel Calix to oust David Thomas and John Holland 6-3, 6-4. Thomas won his singles match against Roberto Schenck 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1.

As they prepared to take on top seeds Jamaica yesterday the Bermudian boys were also ruing their failure to capitalise on many chances. Their opponents, noted Smith, while not ?far superior? in ability exhibited more ?experience in competition at this level?.

Smith and fellow coach Howard Cross said the Bermudian teams produced a good showing and played some ?big points? confidently.
