Local coaches Dennis Brown and Andrew Bascome wasted little time yesterday naming a training squad of 25 players for the upcoming Santos tour of the Island.

Brown and Bascome have been put in charge of a local select that will take on the might of the Brazilians in the final match of the three-match tour at Somerset Cricket Club on February 3.

Santos will also take on Bermuda?s national team and Dandy Town.

?Basically we?re looking to give players in the select team an opportunity to play against the Brazilians,? coach Brown explained.

?A lot of those chosen to train are younger players and so this will provide them with an opportunity to show national coach Kyle Lightbourne their full-potential.?

The squad, said Brown, also contains ?a few experienced players?.

?This was the whole thinking of the idea . . . not to just give national team players exposure but also those who might be on the fringe,? he added.

The local select?s pre-tour preparations include two practice sessions and a possible warm-up match against the senior national squad, revealed Brown.

?We?re looking to have them in a training session later next week because there are league matches this weekend,? he added. ?We play Santos in the final match and so do have ample time to get in at least two training sessions and a warm-up match with the national team.?

Meanwhile, all those invited to train with the local select squad have been asked to attend a special meeting this Saturday at Devonshire Recreation Club at 10.30 a.m. Those unable to attend are asked to call 236-2168.
