Youngsters to watch rather than play

Members of Bermuda?s Under 15 national squad will be among those in attendance at Guaracara Park tomorrow to watch hosts Trinidad take on Windward Islands in the semi-finals of the Carib Beer International Challenge.

The Island?s youngsters were originally scheduled to play their final limited overs friendly against local side Comets tomorrow, but have instead accepted an offer to attend the First Class match pitting Windward Island up against Carib Beer Cup champions Trinidad.

Trinidad defeated Barbados by 264 runs last February to clinch a first First Class championship in 21 years.

It was hoped two-time record holder Brian Lara would be included in Trinidad?s squad. However, the 34-year-old star batsman ? who has amassed 11,187 runs in 121 Test Matches ? will not take part in the match.

Lara holds the record for the highest individual score of 400 not out, established at the Antigua Recreational Ground in 2004 playing against England.

The extraordinarily gifted batsman also scored a magnificent 375 against England in Antigua in 1994.

?The guys are very excited about going to the match and seeing some of the top players in action,? Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) executive Allen Richardson told , speaking from Trinidad.

?We were originally due to play five matches but I think things have worked out very well as five matches might have been a bit too much for the guys. This is the beginning of the season for them and the weather here has been very hot.?

The local contingent were officially invited to tomorrow?s Carib Beer Challenge by directors at the Frank Worrell International Cricket Academy.

Richardson said so far the training exercise has been a success.

?The host clubs have been exceptional to us with food supplied for each match and the guys lining up for each match and meeting the local dignitaries,? he added. ?We have also exchanged gifts and speeches following matches.

?And what we are ultimately trying to teach our players is how to respect of the game of cricket.?

Bermuda?s Under 15 national team are due to return to Bermuda on Saturday night.
