Youth rugby plans kick-off
Plans for a youth rugby season will get off the ground next week when Christopher Naylor, recently appointed Youth Development Officer for the Bermuda Rugby Football Union, holds a joint training session involving various Middle schools from across the island.
On Tuesday, interested students aged 11-14 years from Sandy?s Middle School, Spice Valley Middle School, Warwick Academy, Dellwood Middle School, Saltus Grammar School and Clearwater Middle School will take part in a joint training session at the Warwick Academy School field.
The session will start at 1 p.m. and is aimed at introducing the students to all areas of play including running, passing, tackling, rucking and scrummaging.
In the following weeks, members from the BRFU, who are newly qualified level one coaches, will be conducting training sessions at local schools with the goal of building a competitive league with regular fixtures between schools similar to that enjoyed locally up until the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Near the end of the 12-week season, a National Squad will be selected from the available players and they will be coached in preparation for matches against two visiting teams from the Washington DC area.
These are the same teams that the Under 12 National team faced last year while touring Washington D.C.
There are also plans to send that same team to the United States to face more competition in the form of tour matches or a tournament.
