106 teams contest Goodwill

The 55th Annual Bermuda Goodwill Golf Tournament got off without a hitch yesterday with 106 teams competing for top honors over the next four days at Port Royal, Belmont Hills, Tucker's Point Club and Mid Ocean Club.

It is the second successive year that the event has attracted over 100 teams, organisers said.

In the Team Net Championship, Boston's Bedrock Golf Club (B) — led by lone female professional in the field Lynn Valentine — began their quest with a 13-under-par 57 yesterday at Belmont Hills. And they are closely shadowed by second-placed Essex County Club (B) team who carded a 12-under-par 58 also at Belmont Hills.

Belmont Hills, led by local pro Darron Swan, are a further two shots back after coming in at an 11-under-par 59 at Belmont yesterday. In the Team Championship Gross, visiting professional Craig Marseilles from Canada led a team of experienced local members Anthony Rabain, Millard Beach and San Bezant to an eight-under-par 62 yesterday at Belmont Hills.

Local team Tucker's Point are currently locked in a three-way tie for second with Essex County (A) and Cyprian Keyes after they all shot six-under-par 64. Tucker's Point were at home while Essex (A) and Cyprian Keyes both played at Belmont.

In the Senior Team Division, Bear Hill GC are tied at the top at ten under with Loch Lomond GC out of Florida, while Montebello GC, Crystal Downs CC, Eastward Ho (A), Salt Lake City CC (A) and Sharon CC are currently locked in a five-way tie for first place after all carded two-under 68 yesterday.

The Goodwill Tournament continues today.
