Bermuda trio help school to national finals

A trio of Bermuda international footballers have played a pivotal role in their school's first ever league and cup double to reach the Canadian national championships.

Jacqui Simons, Antonio Lowe and Jason Davis lifted the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Championship for Cape Breton Capers after beating Saint Mary's Huskies in Antognish, Nova Scotia, last weekend.

The 2-0 triumph clinched a memorable double for the Capers who have already secured the 2007 Uteck Bowl league title and are currently competing in the prestigious CIS Championships in British Columbia, Vancouver.

Defender Simons, who has played for Dandy Town, said he was proud to be part of Capers history making team. "The university has never won the AUS Championship nor the league title so this our first ever double," said Simons, of Pembroke. "It's been a great achievement.

"The final against Saint Mary's was a tough game and the wind played a major factor, but thankfully we came through. All three of us (including Lowe and Davis) are Bermuda internationals so we know each other's games pretty well. I think all of us will be available for national team selection for the World Cup qualifiers."

Simons and Davis, who has featured for Wolves, were both recommended to coach Robbie Chiasson by Bermudian and ex-Caper, D'Mitri Butterfield. The pair then informed Chiasson about the talented wing-back Lowe, of Devonshire Colts.

"Jason is our central midfielder and I think one of, if not, the most exciting players in the league," Capers coach Chiasson told the Cape Breton Post, in an article headlined "Bermuda Triangle". "His speed and ability to dribble with the ball is almost unstoppable when he wants to play.

"Jacqui at centre back brings a physical presence, a big strong boy with one of the most powerful shots in the league. Antonio is one of the quicker players we have on the team and he's a left-footed player. Defensively he's pretty solid as well."

Chaisson added that Capers had dominated the weekend-long AUS Championship and would be looking to carry their form into the national championships, their second tournament in as many weeks.

Capers lost their opening game of the CIS Championship 3-0 against Laval on Thursday. They were scheduled to play against Trinity Western yesterday.
