BFA seeking friendly date with Antigua or Puerto Rico after St. Kitts success
Bermuda Football Association (BFA) are currently locked in negotiations behind the scenes to secure a potential World Cup warm-up fixture against either Antigua or Puerto Rico for the Island's senior national squad early in the new year.
With next February's crucial 2010 World Cup qualifier against Cayman Island fast approaching, it has been revealed that plans are in the pipeline that could see Bermuda, fresh off last Sunday's 4-2 demolition of St. Kitts at the National Sports Centre (NSC), possibly face off against another fellow Caribbean Football Union (CFU) rival in mid-January.
There are also additional plans on the table to have Bermuda's 'Gombey Warriors' embark overseas on a mini-training camp as the BFA look to step up its World Cup preparations.
"We are working on some things in the pipeline right now and are hoping to do something in mid-January. Right now the general secretary (David Sabir) is working on one or two items on our behalf and we're hoping come mid-January we can have at least another two matches in Bermuda. We are also looking at the possibility of taking the team abroad on a training camp for maybe seven to eight days after that," BFA technical committee chairman Mark Trott revealed. But the first thing we want to do before we do anything else is firm up two additional matches for January and there are a number of teams that we have looked at. We are looking to play another team from our region (CFU), one possibly higher ranked than St. Kitts."
Bermuda officially launched its pre-World Cup campaign against the visiting St. Kitts at the NSC over the weekend where they split the two-match series against their Caribbean counterparts.
Bermuda were edged 2-1 in the first match last Friday at the NSC, but came roaring back two days later at the same venue to chalk up a first win on home soil in three years.
Trott is now among those who reckon the Island has the potential to get to the next level, but feels the onus is now on the players themselves to put in the necessary leg work to get them there.
Reflecting upon a busy weekend of international football at the NSC, Trott said: "I thought the first match was a case of not putting away our chances when we had them. When you look at it we had three teenagers that started the match, which was a first for a long time. Marquel (Waldron), Reggie (Lambe) and Nahki (Wells) are all teenagers who actually acquitted themselves very well.
"We just made two very bad mistakes and got punished for them, which doesn't help at this level. But other than that if we had put away our chances perhaps the result may have been similar to Sunday's."
In terms of finishing, Bermuda were a totally different bunch in the second match against St. Kitts and, despite playing in spurts, managed to show flashes of the potential Trott knows the Islanders are capable of.
"I thought that was the difference; the chances we had we put away. We created five gilt-edged chances and put away four of them and so you can't complain about that," he added.
Trott also heaped praise upon the likes of winger Tyrell Burgess and midfield maestro Sammy DeGraff, two players that caused all sorts of problems for St. Kitts with their penetrative surges forward and precision passing.
"I thought the players that came in like Keishan (Bean), Tyrell (Burgess) and Sammy (DeGraff) were outstanding," he added. "We lost the game Friday night and nobody made any excuses. During the team meeting (post-match) the coaches addressed the problems we encountered and hence everything was corrected for Sunday."
