Binns' boys stumble in regional final
Kimandi Binns' Mardela High School stumbled in the Bayside Division 1A East Regional final on Tuesday night, losing 2-1 to state champions Pocomoke in extra time in Maryland.
The Warriors had entered the match with high hopes of progressing to a first state final in the school's history. But two disputed goals saw powerhouses Pocomoke erase a 1-0 deficit and advance to a fifth straight state final.
Binns' charges took the lead midway through the first-half when a gamble to play the injured Seth Keplinger paid off as the prolific striker lobbed the advancing 'keeper during a goalmouth scramble.
But Pocomoke demonstrated the form that has swept them to multiple titles in recent years by equalising just before the half on a disputed goal former North Village captain Binns felt was off-side.
"We knew we would get bad calls but that call turned the game. In my opinion it was an obvious off-side but he (referee) said 'play on'," he argued.
Neither team were able to hit the target in the second-half which dragged the match into extra time where Pocomoke settled the affair via another "very close" call that left Warriors for dead.
"I can't complain about that call because it as the first one that really hurt," said Binns, who is already looking forward to next season. "It was a heart-breaking loss. But now it's time to prepare for next year."
