Boulevard struggle in the mud
Boulevard Blazers 3
Somerset Eagles 0
<$t2>Visiting Eagles made the Blazers struggle for victory in the mud at BAA yesterday, scoring twice in the opening half and finding a third goal late in this FA Cup second round tie.
Eagles ran into bad luck after just six minutes when goalkeeeper Kacey Smith misjudged a long ball delivered by Blazers left full-back Cud-joe Mathews — but Blazers still were unable to gain any real authority after taking the slim lead.
Eagles scared their opponents when a Darren Dowling blast was sensationally pushed over by the Blazers ‘keeper, but try as they may they just couldn’t find a quick equaliser.
A determined Eagles team held their opponents on even terms until midfielder John Payne snatched a second goal for Blazers after 32 minutes which enabled them to hold a 2-0 lead at the break.
With both teams struggling to find their footing on the sloppy surface, play was difficult in the second half with few clear-cut chances being created.
Marlon Rojas of Eagles had a good shot palmed away by the Blazers goalkeeper mid-way through the half before Takeyhi Walker netted the third goal for the home side after 78 minutes.
Paget Lions 2
St. George’s Colts 2
(after extra time)<$>
In the day’s extra-time contest, First Division Colts forced struggling Premier Division outfit Paget Lions into a replay after a hotly-contested clash at Wellington Oval.
Although Lions never once trailed it was the Colts who held the upper hand throughout and were unlucky in not coming away with a positive result in regulation time.
The home team’s downfall was the atrocious finishing of forward Allan Douglas jr, who blew at least five clear-cut scoring chances, most coming after he was through on a breakaway.
Lions took a 1-0 lead through Dwia Blyden after 20 minutes but Colts fought back to grab an equaliser 15 minutes later with Tre Houston netting.
Lions managed to get a go-ahead goal after 80 minutes through Marvin Belboda but their lead was short-lived as Jarreau Hayward snatched an equaliser five minutes from the end. Colts held a slight edge in extra time but were unable to find the winner while Lions ran into trouble when they were reduced to ten players during the second half of extra time when Blyden was sent off by referee Colin Richardson.
North Village Rams2 X’Roads 0
>As expected defending champions Rams emerged as winners — but it certainly wasn’t without a scare. The Premier Division side were stretched to the limit by the First Division outfit and it took an early goal by Jemeiko Jennings and a late second goal by substitute Shane Hollis to decide the contest.
In between the two strikes X’Roads matched their opponents all over Bernard Park and were unlucky to come away without a single goal.
Although Jennings gave Rams a lead after just three minutes, X’Roads displayed a lot of fight and determination and matched their opponents for the rest of the half. When play re-started the contest continued to be even with X’Roads having their fine moments, but as play progressed Village gained a slight edge and it wasn’t a surprise when Hollis came off the bench to seal victory with his goal after 78 minutes.
Prospect United 2
Valley 1
<**J>A goal in each half saw First Division United edge by a Commercial Division side at Police field, but they had to come from behind to accomplish victory.
Craig Darrell stunned United with a goal after 14 minutes that put Valley ahead, but a determined United refused to yield.
They grabbed a quick equaliser through Darrien Harvey after 17 minutes and then had a goal from substitute Kieron Bennett ten minutes from time to seal victory.
